Inlays and Onlays
If your teeth have weakened due to disease or damage, inlays or onlays may be an ideal form of restoration for you. They add strength to a weak tooth and are more natural-looking and long-lasting than traditional fillings. Both of these are solutions that restore chips, breaks and cracks in your teeth.
A dental inlay is applied to the center and chewing surface of a tooth. The material is filled to fix any structural damage to the tooth. In contrast to this, a dental onlay is a restoration applied to the cusps of an affected tooth. Onlays are typically used in cases where extensive damage has occurred to a tooth.
Advancements in dental technology now allow us to create dental inlays and onlays that perfectly fit your teeth and can be made to match the natural shade of your teeth. With proper care, these can last for up to ten years. They are easy to care for with regular brushing, flossing, and bi-annual visits to our office for checkups and cleanings.
The process of installing inlays and onlays is a simple and quick one and generally takes two appointments to finish. The procedure is conducted under the effect of local anesthesia and begins with the removal of existing decay in the tooth. Then, the tooth is prepared for receiving the restoration. An impression is taken to prepare your custom inlay or onlay, which is sent to a dental lab. Till then, a temporary restoration is placed over your teeth. Once the permanent restoration is ready, it is cemented on to the tooth and then polished to ensure a smooth finish.
