Bacteria present in the plaque deposits around the base of your teeth are a major cause of gum infections. If left untreated, gum disease can progress to a stage where it can cause severe complications such as tooth loss and can also be detrimental to your physical health. Regardless of the cause, our practice offers treatment for various stages of gum disease to help you get back on track with your oral health.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
- Teeth sensitivity
- Persistent bad breath, that does not subside even after brushing, flossing and using mouthwash
- Swollen or bleeding gums
- Pain while chewing
- Mouth sores
- Loose teeth
- Receding gums or teeth that are partially covered because of swollen gums
All the above signs are indicative of a problem with your gums. Ignoring them can lead to further problems in future, so it is best to contact our office if you experience any of the above symptoms.
We offer the following periodontal treatments at our office:
- Scaling and Root Planing:
Root planing and scaling are some of the most effective non-surgical treatments for periodontal disease. This is a deep cleaning treatment performed to remove tartar deposits between the gums and down to the roots of the teeth. Scaling is followed by planing of the root surfaces to prevent the deposit of bacteria again. The procedure may involve the use of local anesthesia.
- Root Surface debridement:
Root debridement involves clearing plaque and tartar from the deep tissue pockets to help the gums regenerate. With root debridement, inflammation of the gums will mean that the treatment will need to be done over several appointments. Depending on your level of discomfort, you may or may not need an anesthetic for the procedure. Sometimes, with cases of very severe gum disease or very heavy tartar build-up, we may decide to clean one-half of your mouth per visit.
