The retention phase of orthodontic therapy begins once your braces have been taken off. Your braces help to create a beautiful, straight smile for you, but your newly positioned teeth have a tendency to shift back into their old places, which could defeat the whole purpose of your orthodontic treatment. A retainer is an appliance which is worn after the completion of orthodontic treatment to help the teeth stay in their new positions. Retainers can also help fix speech problems.
Retainers work by holding the teeth in their correct alignment while the surrounding muscle, bone and gums adjust to the new position of your teeth. Retainers are custom-made and can be removable or fixed
Wearing retainers is important until your bite stabilizes as it takes time for the bone and all the tissues around your teeth to reorganize. There is a high chance of relapse in the first month after the braces are removed. Usually, retainers are worn for as long a time as you have had your braces. If your teeth move back to their original positions, you may need fixed braces again to correct them.
